Geo-Source Heat PumpsGeo-Source heat pumps are a type of HVAC system that is becoming more widely used within new construction. Geo-Source heat pumps provide superior comfort, economical operation, noise reduction, and are low maintenance. Mitlyng Electric installs, repairs and provides maintenance for many different types of Geo-Source heat pumps/systems.
What are Geo-Source Heat Pumps?
Geo-Source or Geothremal heat pumps are a source of heating and cooling from the ground--taking advantage of our Earth’s ability to store energy in the form of heat. Geothermal heat pumps operate on a small amount of electricity and heat or cool your building through heat transfer; either moving heat from the earth to your building or vise versa. This type of heating and cooling system is environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and its abilities are comparable to those of any other system.
How do they Work?
These pumps work by obtaining heat through a connection to the earth/ground, this connection is called a ground loop or earth loop. The ground loop is actually a piping system that circulates a mixture of water and antifreeze through it; circulating into the earth, to the geothermal heat pump and back. The circulating mixture absorbs heat from the earth, carries it to the heat pump where it is extracted and the heat is then distributed into the building. Distribution takes place through conventional air ducts or, with a hydronic or circulating fluid system, through baseboard radiators, fan-coil units, or under –floor circulating pipes. Because the heat pump contains a compressor the ground temperature is rather insignificant, allowing ground loop systems and Geo-Source heat pumps to perform efficiently virtually anywhere in the United States.

What are the Advantages in Using a Geo-Source Heat Pump?
Geo-Source heat pumps are four times more efficient. Unlike conventional methods of heating and cooling, such as gas, propane, oil or electric which always have a constant and significant fuel cost, Geo-Source heat pumps use only a small amount of electricity. Because of this, it is actually possible to calculate a “pay out period” for the purchase of a Geo-Source heat pump, which is based on the cost of purchasing and running one verses the cost of continually paying for fuel. These types of systems also aid in noise reduction and are low maintenance.
